Commissioning is a very important role in Scouting. A Commissioner is a Scouter who has some experience with the Scouting program. A Commissioner is a person who may not know all the answers, but knows how to find them. A Commissioner is a leader who helps Scout units succeed. There are several roles that a Commissioner plays including friend, representative, unit “doctor”, teacher, and counselor. As a friend, the Commissioner is available to help units find the information that they need to succeed. The Commissioner is an advocate of the unit needs. As a representative, the Commissioner helps represent the ideals, principles, and policies of the Boy Scouts of America. As a unit “doctor", the Commissioner watches for symptoms of trouble within the unit and helps to diagnose the real ailment, prescribe a remedy, and follow up on the “patient.” As a teacher, the Commissioner shares knowledge with the units. When the Commissioner does not know the answer to a Unit’s questions, they work to find the answer by consulting with other Key Leaders within the District and Council. As a counselor, the Commissioner helps units to solve their own problems.

We are always on the lookout for new commissioners to help out with these important roles. Several of our units currently do not have unit commissioners assigned to them and really need this resource. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Unit Commissioner or a part of the Roundtable Commissioner team, please contact Lynda Worlow at commissioner@oriondistrict.org.
